Audi Lighthouse wins major award for commercial architecture
Audi’s impressive ‘Lighthouse’ building has won a major NSW award for Commercial Architecture at the 2010 Architecture Awards, held in Sydney. In addition to the major prize for commercial architecture, the building also
received a Commendation for Interior Architecture.
The Audi Lighthouse Sydney is based on an original design for the ‘Audi Terminal’ concept by the brand’s master architect, Allmann Sattler Wappner Architects, and was interpreted for Australia by renowned architectural firm, Johnson Pilton Walker.
JPW Director, Paul van Ratingen, the lead architect on the Audi Lighthouse project says the firm is very proud of the building and the award, which demonstrates the significance of striving for an innovative design solution that has elevated the humble car showroom to a new element within the city, stacking its diverse operations and creating a strong public interface.
Taking just 12 months to build, and officially opening in August 2009, the $50 million, 16,000+ square metre Audi Lighthouse project is the largest of its kind in the world and signifies the importance of Australia as a strategic growth market for the Audi brand.
It incorporates a flagship retail showroom for new and Audi Approved preowned vehicles, customer facilities including a children’s play area, lifestyle shop, business centre, the Audi Café Bavaria and an aftersales centre. The
building is also home to the head office of Audi Australia.
The Audi retail and after-sales facility, a subsidiary of Audi Australia Pty Ltd, trades as “Audi Centre Sydney” and champions benchmark processes, profitability, Corporate Identity and operational standards. The facility includes space for more than 25 new cars, 70 pre-owned vehicles and 20 productive service bays.
Around 45 million cars per year pass the site and with 100 metres of street frontage on one of Sydney’s busiest arterial roads, it is hard to miss this extraordinary brand statement for Audi Australia.
