The Sun Screen
The sun screen is an important part of the library’s eco friendly components. It is being designed to provide shading in summer when the sun is high in the sky, and direct light in winter when the sun is low in the sky. This means the inside of the library will have lots of natural light all year but in summer the light will be filtered. By protecting the library from the hot summer sun, and allowing sun and warmth into the building during winter, we also reduce the amount of air conditioning required. This goes towards creating a healthy and eco responsible library and learning environment for Bialik students and staff.
Key green environmental features include:
- A north facing sun screen that lets in natural light but blocks the hot summer sun. This reduces the need to use artificial light inside the library and reduces the need for air conditioning.
- High performance double glazing that lets in light but blocks the heat. This also reduces the need for air conditioning in summer.
- Low energy lighting.
- Window louvers that allow fresh air to circulate throughout the building. This reduces the need to rely on air conditioning. In summer the hot air in the building can also be purged overnight when it is cooler.
- High grade insulation in the roof, ceilings, and walls to keep the building warm in winter.
